Have you ever herd of the Petrified Forest National Park? It's known primarily for its fossilized trees that lived in the late Triassic period of the Mesozoic era --oh, about 225 million years ago. I'm convinced that the wood for our paneling came from that prehistoric timber. Well, maybe the paneling that graces our home isn't quite that old (I haven't carbon dated it yet), but it's about as hard and impossible to work with.
Try as I might to hang a picture, all that is at the end of the day are a box of bent nails. So it was no surprise to me when we tried to paint it, it was turning into a mess. The stain kept bleeding through the test area -- it just was not working out and we started talking of just putting drywall up. Not a project I was too keen about with a baby in the house. We decided to work on a couple other things in the meantime.
It was the toward the end of summer and I decide to visit my sister's family for a couple of weeks before school started. That's when my husband's creativity went to work! We came back home to a new living room! He "white washed" the paneling -- and it was beautiful! As an added bonus, he built a new mantle around our fireplace. I'm taking this look to the rest of the house -- next space is our home office.
It's an economical way to brighten and update the space. It's a few hundred dollars and a few of days versus thousands of dollars and weeks in the alternative of either covering or replacing the paneling with drywall. It's definitely a unique look. I've dubbed it distressed country chic!
What do you think?
